Tips for better communication with your Doctor

As moms we spend A LOT of time at the doctors office.  While we are pregnant we are there for what seems like every week.  Once the baby is born we are not only seeing the ob/gyn, but now the pediatrician.  And don't even get me started on how many times you end up at the doctor with four boys! I don't want to think about how many hours I've spent in the waiting rooms and doctors offices.  But even with all the time we spend at the doctor, many times we don't really TALK to them.   Studies show we actually ask more questions when buying a cell phone than they do during medical appointments.   Oops . . . embarrassing!

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) is launching of a new initiative with the Ad Council to encourage clinicians and patients to engage in effective two-way communication to ensure safer care and better health outcomes.

Here are some suggested questions below to help get you started with better communication with your doc:
  1. What is the test for?
  2. How many times have you done this procedure?
  3. When will I get the results?
  4. Why do I need this treatment?
  5. Are there any alternatives?
  6. What are the possible complications?
  7. Which hospital is best for my needs?
  8. How do you spell the name of that drug?
  9. Are there any side effects?
  10. Will this medicine interact with medicines that I'm already taking?
They have a cool tool called the Question Builder to help you be prepared for your next medical appointment. Create a list of questions that you can take with you whether you are getting a checkup, talking about a problem or health condition, getting a prescription, or discussing a medical test or surgery. Whatever the reason for your visit, it is important to be prepared. With the Question Builder, it is easy.   Another good time saver is the glossary.

There are a couple helpful new videos and other valuable tips and tools available here that truly delve into the importance of very open communication between clinicians and their patients.  The Wall Street Journal recently published an article covering the news.  You can also find the full series of new public service videos featuring real clinicians and patients here
Ok, so admittedly not the most provocative or entertaining of links and videos, but sometimes life isn't either one of those. Kinda like the excitement of waiting in a doctors office.  But . . . while you wait - why not take a minute and check out these tips on great communication with your doctor before you step into his/her office. You can listen to a mother of 3, Laurri Diener talk about how better communication with her doctor helped her to get the right diagnosis and treatment so that she could sleep more and worry less.   And honestly, what mom doesn't need more/less of those!

Steam Mops: My favorite - the Haan (and it's on sale!)

A few years back when my SIL, Kris, was writing her book, Becentsable, I went out to visit her to help with the kids and house so she could finish up the last couple chapters. While I was there she introduced me to The Haan. I adore the Haan! It is by far the best floor cleaning tool I have ever used. It works on wood and tile beautifully.  I have even steam cleaned the walls of the shower with the Haan.  It uses steam - no chemicals - no cleaners - just steam.  Fill it with water, let it heat up, and sanitize away.  The pads come off so you can toss them in the laundry.  And man oh man, does your floor feel amazing afterwards!

I bring this up because today on Amazon it is on sale for $78.26.(I paid over $100 for mine).  You get free super saving shipping on this product!  They have a bunch of other steam cleaners on sale as well.  To see all of them, or to purchase your Haan, visit here.

And while you are over at Amazon, check out Becentsable!  Kris and Chrissy did a great job putting this together - it will save you tons of money!

    Declutter Goodness

I was a stay-at-home mom for 17 years.  I loved everything about it, but when my boys were much younger, there were a few years [read few plus plus plus] I had a hard time finding the time or energy for a housecleaning routine.  There were many days where I was simply too tired, too pregnant, or too overwhelmed with mommy duties - school, soccer, scouts, volunteering, church, karate, blah blah, you know!  I am sure you are living your own version of crazy busy insanity right now.  There were so many days when picking up or even taking a shower were put on the back burner.  Well now my kids are much older and incredibly self sufficient.  [deep breath - sigh of relief]

A few of the things I found helpful in making my life manageable were teaching my boys how to play on their own for short lengths of time when they were super young, how to prepare a simple meal on their own around the age of 8, when they were 10ish I taught them how to do laundry and mend/sew, but one of the most helpful things I did was follow The FlyLady.  It's an amazing site that motivates you to get the job of organizing your home and life done one baby step at a time.  The Flylady was life changing for me.  It broke tasks down which seemed so overwhelming and ominous to do-able bite size pieces.  Everyday there is a task to do, a 15 minute little thing for you to take on.  And honestly, once you see the progress of your house getting organized, you feel empowered to take on even more.  You know it is no longer an impossible task - You have seen results - It's very encouraging!

Now that I am a new working-outside-the-home mom I have found myself getting a bit overwhelmed again. I nanny two little ones during the day, then I go home to make dinner for my family, get homework done, do the mom-taxi thing, spend some fun time with my boys, and then work my other jobs of personal assistant and blogger.  Laundry and dishes can pile up quickly in a house of 6 people - three of them teenagers (who bring lots of other teenagers home with them lol).  I am thankful to have a neat perspective right now on mommy life.  I am with a 2 yo and a 9 mo old during the day and get my fill of diaper changes, bubble blowing, nap time, bath time, coloring, book reading, tiny and not so tiny tantrums, kisses, hugs, and adorableness.  Then I go home to my boys who, honestly, when they walk into the kitchen I have to look up and ask myself, who is that man standing here! My little ones turning into grown-ups is a super hard thing to wrap my head around.  The relationships are still sweet and beautiful and strong and close but so so different. But I digress, my point is . . . I love this new adventure in my life as nanny and mom, but am having to take a few baby steps in getting the house organized again.

So FlyLady, I am back!  Thanks for being there to help me get a little bit of what's left of my sanity back.  Heart You!   And I was excited to see The FlyLady in coherts with Cozi - my fave family calendar EVER!  So if you are feeling overwhelmed, definitely check out The FlyLady.  Her site is AWESOMELY helpful, as are the books she has written:
     $10.20

    $10.80
oh sanity, how i've missed thee!  The quote at the beginning of this post is one of my favorite.  I have it on a sticker, but I think I am going to have to grab this kitchen towel too! and check out Blended - she wrote a fun post for multi-tasking moms!

Sexy Aprons! Slow Jams! Suddenly mopping isn't so . . . blah!

I collect vintage aprons.  Some are very simple, some silly, and a few are feminine and sexy.  I LOVE my aprons!  They are not only practical, but a lot of fun to wear!   Plus it is my belief men like seeing women in aprons. Red Couch (a fun little recipe site) posted a quote from the Mitford series, A Light in the Window, which fits my belief,
"...., what had she done to herself? She looked so positively breathtaking that he was stopped in his tracks. 'It's the apron,' she said, reading his mind. 'Men like seeing women in aprons.' He kissed her tenderly. 'Please!' she murmured against his cheek. "One mustn't put dessert first.'
So mammas . . . put those sexy aprons on!
Here are some of my favorite slow jams to clean to:
