Homemade Popsicles - YUM!

One of our favorite things to do in the summer is hit up the farmers market and buy all sorts of fresh fruit.  We can't possibly eat all of it before some of it goes bad, but one of the things the kids love to do is make smoothies and popsicles.  They think they are simply eating/drinking pure yumminess, but they are also getting lots of vitamins, fiber, and anti-oxidants.  

Serving up fruit for snacks and dessert year round is always a winner, but in the summer is it extra delicious!  There are a lot of great recipes out there for ice pops, and this summer I plan on trying more than a few of them.  Here are some I found today on-line:

Side note:  when I chop up the fruit, I also puree up a bunch and freeze in storage containers so whenever we wanted a smoothie I could whip one up super quick.  So . . . this one time a friend came over and I served her a smoothie.  After she was about half way done, she asked "what fruit is in this?"  I told her, "I can't remember, I think mango, peach, a little papaya, and . . ", then she finished my sentence with a swelling up tongue . . . "and kiwi?".  oops - she was allergic.  So if you do this (which it is an awesome time saver for summer treats), you may want to mark the lid with what fruits are in the mixture. :-/

Summer Concerts!

Saving at the Pump this Summer

When I was young military brat my family and I lived in England.  We came back to the States in 1976.  A friend of my fathers had a car waiting for us when we landed and our cross country road trip to Missouri began right after we got off the plane. There was a big gasoline shortage in 1976.  Gas stations across the country were rationing their gas by using your license plate numbers, type of vehicle, and days of the week. I remember waiting in the car at the pump for hours to buy just a few dollars worth - the amount you could buy was also rationed.  We would then have to go to the next station and wait again so we could put more gas in the tank.   As you can imagine, this made a cross country road trip hot, cranky, and days longer.   It was memorably horrible for me as a child, I can only imagine what my parents went through on that trip. LOL.

It isn't THAT bad now, but gas prices are ridiculously high, making those summer road trips a bit more costly.  But, here are a few ways to help you save at the pump, whether you are running errands around town or on your family road trip.  :-)

Travel N.Y. Times has a fantastic article on ways to save at the pump, sharing 13 simple and practical ways to save you green on your travels this summer. Suggestions like slowing down, buying a cruise card and skipping the toll-booth lanes, checking your tire pressure, and using sites like Autoslash.com to help save on the cost of your car rental to help off set the cost of gas.

Health Recipes put together 30 amazingly simple ideas to help you save on gas.  Suggestions like buying your gas during coolest time of day because during these times gasoline is densest and parking your car so that you can later begin to travel in forward gear.  Avoiding reverse gear maneuvers helps save gas - who knew?

If you shop at Kroger and Wal-mart, check out this great post Frugal Dad wrote up on price discounts and comparisons at these two stores.  If you do shop at these stores, be sure to check out the weekly ad and coupon match-ups. And don't forget about Cellfire if you are a Kroger shopper!

Camp Happy Heart from Build A Bear

What kid doesn't love summer camp? But it doesn't always fit into the schedule.

Right now at Buildabearville.com your kids can join 600,000 other kids from around the world in the third annul Camp Happy Heart.

At Camp Happy Heart your children are able to join one of four ice-cream themed teams to compete against other teams for virtual prizes.

Summer Entertainment Freebies to keep the kiddos busy :-)

There are always a ton of free things that you can do with your family in the summer. This years events are starting to pop up so I thought I would list a few that we have now and add to the list throughout the summer so you can keep your family entertained for free!

Check out the Apple Retail Stores: Youth Workshops for free hands-on workshops that teach you how to compose a song, produce a movie, create a photo album, or make a presentation. Go here to find a participating store near you!


Kids Bowl Free: Children whose age does not exceed a limit by a participating bowling center are eligible to register for 2 free games a day, all summer long. Go here to see if a bowling center in your area is participating and to sign up!

Barnes and Noble has an awesome summer reading program for kids in grades 1-6! If your child reads 8 books over the summer, they are eligible to choose a free book from Barnes and Noble! This program runs from May 25th to September 7th.
